About Us
The Kalmia Garden Club, located in Needham MA, was founded in 1960 and became a member of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts in 1962. Throughout its history, the Club has focused both on civic projects and on providing opportunities for members to increase their knowledge about horticulture, garden and floral design, and environmental advocacy. Currently, the Kalmia Garden Club maintains a public garden at the intersection of Great Plain Avenue and Washington Avenue in Needham. The Club also supports a public garden at the Linden-Chambers Housing Community and works collaboratively with the Needham Housing Authority to beautify the Needham-Chambers residences by planting flower boxes in the spring and providing holiday decorations in the winter. Club members provide flower arrangements for the Needham Public Schools Distinguished Career Award luncheon every three years on a rotating basis with the other two Needham garden clubs and participate annually in Needham’s Art in Bloom event. Recently, the Club has also provided flower arrangements to the Center at the Heights in Needham for their annual Thanksgiving dinner. In addition, as administrator of the Anna Burnham Scholarship Fund, the Club offers a scholarship each year to a graduating Needham senior who is planning to attend college or university to pursue an interest in either horticulture or environmental science. The Club meets monthly from September through June, providing speakers and workshops on topics related to all aspects of gardening, floral design, and environmental stewardship. Presenters at recent meetings have shared their expertise on topics as varied as the importance of bees and pollination in the ecosystem to the making of artful bud vase arrangements. The Club also makes contributions to Green Needham, the Charles River Watershed Association, The Native Plant Trust, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, and the Trustees of the Reservation. Club membership is limited to thirty-five active members. Club meetings are held in the evenings, with selected meetings each year open to the public. Active members must attend at least six meetings annually and participate in Committee and Board activities. Prospective members must attend at least one meeting prior to applying and be sponsored by two active members.
